The description of the (Hell) Fire and the fact that it has already been created

باب صِفَةِ النَّارِ وَأَنَّهَا مَخْلُوقَةٌ

{غَسَاقًا} يُقَالُ غَسَقَتْ عَيْنُهُ وَيَغْسِقُ الْجُرْحُ، وَكَأَنَّ الْغَسَاقَ وَالْغَسْقَ وَاحِدٌ. {غِسْلِينَ} كُلُّ شَيْءٍ غَسَلْتَهُ فَخَرَجَ مِنْهُ شَيْءٌ فَهُوَ غِسْلِينَ، فِعْلِينَ مِنَ الْغَسْلِ مِنَ الْجُرْحِ وَالدَّبَرِ. وَقَالَ عِكْرِمَةُ: {حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ} حَطَبُ بِالْحَبَشِيَّةِ. وَقَالَ غَيْرُهُ: {حَاصِبًا} الرِّيحُ الْعَاصِفُ، وَالْحَاصِبُ مَا تَرْمِي بِهِ الرِّيحُ، وَمِنْهُ حَصَبُ جَهَنَّمَ، يُرْمَى بِهِ فِي جَهَنَّمَ هُمْ حَصَبُهَا، وَيُقَالُ حَصَبَ فِي الأَرْضِ ذَهَبَ، وَالْحَصَبُ مُشْتَقٌّ مِنْ حَصْبَاءِ الْحِجَارَةِ. {صَدِيدٌ} قَيْحٌ وَدَمٌ. {خَبَتْ} طَفِئَتْ. {تُورُونَ} تَسْتَخْرِجُونَ، أَوْرَيْتُ أَوْقَدْتُ. {لِلْمُقْوِينَ} لِلْمُسَافِرِينَ، وَالْقِيُّ الْقَفْرُ. وَقَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ صِرَاطُ الْجَحِيمِ سَوَاءُ الْجَحِيمِ وَوَسَطُ الْجَحِيمِ {لَشَوْبًا مِنْ حَمِيمٍ} يُخْلَطُ طَعَامُهُمْ وَيُسَاطُ بِالْحَمِيمِ. {زَفِيرٌ وَشَهِيقٌ} صَوْتٌ شَدِيدٌ، وَصَوْتٌ ضَعِيفٌ. {وِرْدًا} عِطَاشًا. {غَيًّا} خُسْرَانًا، وَقَالَ مُجَاهِدٌ: {يُسْجَرُونَ} تُوقَدُ بِهِمُ النَّارُ {وَنُحَاسٌ} الصُّفْرُ، يُصَبُّ عَلَى رُءُوسِهِمْ، يُقَالُ: {ذُوقُوا} بَاشِرُوا وَجَرِّبُوا، وَلَيْسَ هَذَا مِنْ ذَوْقِ الْفَمِ. مَارِجٌ خَالِصٌ مِنَ النَّارِ، مَرَجَ الأَمِيرُ رَعِيَّتَهُ إِذَا خَلاَّهُمْ يَعْدُو بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ. {مَرِيجٍ} مُلْتَبِسٌ، مَرَجَ أَمْرُ النَّاسِ اخْتَلَطَ، {مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ} مَرَجْتَ دَابَّتَكَ تَرَكْتَهَا.

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ مُهَاجِرٍ أَبِي الْحَسَنِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ زَيْدَ بْنَ وَهْبٍ، يَقُولُ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا ذَرٍّ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فِي سَفَرٍ فَقَالَ ‏"‏ أَبْرِدْ ‏"‏‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَبْرِدْ ‏"‏‏.‏ حَتَّى فَاءَ الْفَىْءُ، يَعْنِي لِلتُّلُولِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَبْرِدُوا بِالصَّلاَةِ، فَإِنَّ شِدَّةَ الْحَرِّ مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ ‏"‏‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Dhar:

While the Prophet (ﷺ) was on a journey, he said (regarding the performance of the Zuhr prayer), "Wait till it (i.e. the weather) gets cooler." He said the same again till the shade of the hillocks extended. Then he said, "Delay the (Zuhr) Prayer till it gets cooler, for the severity of heat is from the increase in heat of Hell (fire).

‏ أَبْرِدُوا بِالصَّلاَةِ فَإِنَّ شِدَّةَ الْحَرِّ مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ ‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Sa`d:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Delay the (Zuhr) Prayer till it gets cooler, for the severity of heat is from the increase in the heat of Hell (fire).

‏ اشْتَكَتِ النَّارُ إِلَى رَبِّهَا، فَقَالَتْ رَبِّ أَكَلَ بَعْضِي بَعْضًا، فَأَذِنَ لَهَا بِنَفَسَيْنِ نَفَسٍ فِي الشِّتَاءِ وَنَفَسٍ فِي الصَّيْفِ، فَأَشَدُّ مَا تَجِدُونَ فِي الْحَرِّ، وَأَشَدُّ مَا تَجِدُونَ مِنَ الزَّمْهَرِيرِ ‏

‏‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The (Hell) Fire complained to its Lord saying, 'O my Lord! My different parts eat up each other.' So, He allowed it to take two breaths, one in the winter and the other in summer, and this is the reason for the severe heat and the bitter cold you find (in weather).

حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَامِرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ، عَنْ أَبِي جَمْرَةَ الضُّبَعِيِّ، قَالَ كُنْتُ أُجَالِسُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ بِمَكَّةَ، فَأَخَذَتْنِي الْحُمَّى، فَقَالَ أَبْرِدْهَا عَنْكَ بِمَاءِ زَمْزَمَ، فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ الْحُمَّى مِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوهَا بِالْمَاءِ ‏"‏‏.‏ أَوْ قَالَ ‏"‏ بِمَاءِ زَمْزَمَ ‏"‏‏.‏ شَكَّ هَمَّامٌ‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Jamra Ad-Dabi:

I used to sit with Ibn `Abbas in Mecca. Once I had a fever and he said (to me), "Cool your fever with Zamzam water, for Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 'It, (the Fever) is from the heat of the (Hell) Fire; so, cool it with water (or Zamzam water).

Narrated Rafi` bin Khadij:

I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, "Fever is from the heat of the (Hell) Fire; so cool it with water."

English translation

Narrated Aisha:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Fever is from the heat of the (Hell) Fire, so cool it with water."

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي أُوَيْسٍ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي مَالِكٌ، عَنْ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنِ الأَعْرَجِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏"‏ نَارُكُمْ جُزْءٌ مِنْ سَبْعِينَ جُزْءًا مِنْ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ ‏"‏‏.‏ قِيلَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، إِنْ كَانَتْ لَكَافِيَةً‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ فُضِّلَتْ عَلَيْهِنَّ بِتِسْعَةٍ وَسِتِّينَ جُزْءًا، كُلُّهُنَّ مِثْلُ حَرِّهَا ‏"‏‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Your (ordinary) fire is one of 70 parts of the (Hell) Fire." Someone asked, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) This (ordinary) fire would have been sufficient (to torture the unbelievers)," Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The (Hell) Fire has 69 parts more than the ordinary (worldly) fire, each part is as hot as this (worldly) fire."

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، سَمِعَ عَطَاءً، يُخْبِرُ عَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ يَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْرَأُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ‏{‏وَنَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ ‏}‏‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Yali:

That he heard the Prophet (ﷺ) on the pulpit reciting:-- "They will cry: "O Malik!' (43:77) (Malik is the gate-keeper (angel) of the (Hell) Fire.)

‏ يُجَاءُ بِالرَّجُلِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَيُلْقَى فِي النَّارِ، فَتَنْدَلِقُ أَقْتَابُهُ فِي النَّارِ، فَيَدُورُ كَمَا يَدُورُ الْحِمَارُ بِرَحَاهُ، فَيَجْتَمِعُ أَهْلُ النَّارِ عَلَيْهِ، فَيَقُولُونَ أَىْ فُلاَنُ، مَا شَأْنُكَ أَلَيْسَ كُنْتَ تَأْمُرُنَا بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَى عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ قَالَ كُنْتُ آمُرُكُمْ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَلاَ آتِيهِ، وَأَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَآتِيهِ ‏

‏‏.‏ رَوَاهُ غُنْدَرٌ عَنْ شُعْبَةَ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ‏.‏

English translation

Narrated Abu Wail:

Somebody said to Usama, "Will you go to so-and-so (i.e. `Uthman) and talk to him (i.e. advise him regarding ruling the country)?" He said, "You see that I don't talk to him. Really I talk to (advise) him secretly without opening a gate (of affliction), for neither do I want to be the first to open it (i.e. rebellion), nor will I say to a man who is my ruler that he is the best of all the people after I have heard something from Allah s Messenger ." They said, What have you heard him saying? He said, "I have heard him saying, "A man will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and thrown in the (Hell) Fire, so that his intestines will come out, and he will go around like a donkey goes around a millstone. The people of (Hell) Fire will gather around him and say: O so-and-so! What is wrong with you? Didn't you use to order us to do good deeds and forbid us to do bad deeds? He will reply: Yes, I used to order you to do good deeds, but I did not do them myself, and I used to forbid you to do bad deeds, yet I used to do them myself."
