Just as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade giving children unpleasant or offensive names, he also prohibited names that imply praise or self-righteousness.This is clearly demonstrated in the Hadith where Zaynab bint Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) who was raised in the household of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Muhammad ibn `Amr ibn `Ata’ (may Allah have mercy on him him) one of the Successors of the Companions (Tabi`un), about the name of his newborn daughter. He said, “I named her Barrah,” derived from the word Birr which means performing good deeds. Zaynab replied that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had forbidden this name, because it involved self-praise and an exaggerated attribution of virtue. She then informed him that her own family had once named her Barrah, but when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to know of it, he said: “Do not ascribe purity to yourselves.
