The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "I was granted victory with As-Saba and the nation of 'Ad was destroyed by Ad- Dabur (westerly wind) .

Allah, Exalted be He, supports His prophets and messengers with whatever He desires, and grants them victory by whatever means He wills. He granted certain prophets with perceptible miracles to establish the credibility of their prophethood and message and guides their people. In this hadeeth, the Prophet ﷺ states that he was made victorious with “the Sabaa” - which is a wind that blows from the East. The story [behind this] hadeeth alludes to when Allah, Most High, sent a cold, blistering wind during a winter night on the day of the Battle of the Trench upon the Confederates who had gathered to fight the Muslims. The frigid winds uprooted the tents of the polytheists, put out their fires, and upturned their cooking wares. That was one of the reasons why they surrendered and were defeated. This was a miracle for the Messenger of Allah, and the bounties which Allah, Exalted be He, showered over the Muslims. Then, he ﷺ said: “the nation of ʿAad were wiped out by al-Daboor.” - which is a wind that blows from the West, and Allah inflicted it upon a tribe of Jews for a gruelling seven nights and eight days. Namely, that the number of days that the winds ripped through their encampments were consecutive and eventually annihilated them. And it has been said that the Sabaa is [the gust] which comes from behind your back when you are facing the Qiblah whileal-Daboor is the wind which comes towards the direction of your face when you are oriented towards the Qiblah. This hadeeth indicates that sometimes the wind brings about mercy, and other times punishment. For this reason, the people should take heed, and engage in pious deeds and not become impetuous towards the universal signs of Allah [which are all around us], because one of them may carry within a punishment. From the other benefits that we can conclude from this hadeeth is to keep in mind that some of the winds that Allah sends are an aid and mercy, like al-Sabaa while some of them can be a chastisement, like al-Daboor. [This narration serves] as an explanation on the preference of some created entities over others; and their distinctions - such as the wind of mercy and the wind of punishment. It teaches us the permissibility of a person informing others about what Allah has blessed him with. Namely, in terms of speaking about the grace of Allah, and recognizing it and thanking Him for it; and this should not be done for the sake of pride or seeking the adoration from others. Finally, it informs us about past nations and their destruction, so that we take heed and learn a lesson from their stories. .
