Sahih al-Bukhari, 912
sahihNarrated As-Saib bin Yazid:
In the lifetime of the Prophet, Abu Bakr and `Umar, the Adhan for the Jumua prayer used to be pronounced when the Imam sat on the pulpit. But during the Caliphate of `Uthman when the Muslims increased in number, a third Adhan at Az-Zaura' was added. Abu `Abdullah said, "Az-Zaura' is a place in the market of Medina."

The adhan was prescribed to inform people that the time for prayer had begun. Based on that, the ruler or governor would adopt means that help to inform people that the time for prayer had begun or was about to start, so that they could get ready and hasten to attend the prayer in congregation and not miss it. In this hadith, al-Sa’ib ibn Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the beginning of the adhan for Jumu‘ah prayer at the time of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came when the imam ascended the minbar. Then Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) followed him in that, during their caliphates. During the caliphate of ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), when the number of people increased, he added a third call given from al-Zawra’. In other words, he added an extra call to that which is given today when the imam is on the minbar. He called it a third call, because he regarded the iqamah as another call. This call was given from al-Zawra’, which was a place in the market of Madinah that was elevated, like a minaret. It was also said that it was a house in the market of Madinah, on the roof of which the mu’adhdhins stood. Perhaps this house was called Zawra’ because it was different from the other buildings in the city. This addition of a call is something that may be based on ijtihad, so if there is a need for such a thing at any time, the people may do it with no blame on them. But if there is no need to do that, then they should go back to the Sunnah of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), as it was narrated by Abu Dawud: “You should adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs.”.
