علي بن محمد الجزائري، المعروف بابن الترجمان: من كبار العلماء، مشارك في كثير من العلوم، ولد بمدينة الجزائر وبها نشأ وتعلم. رحل الى المشرق ودخل بلاد الروم مرارا وحظي بأرباب الدولة، ثم سكن القاهرة واختص بالأمير أحمد آغا أمين دار الضرب بمصر. وملا نشب القتال بين الروس والدولة العثمانية، توجه الى ميدان القتال داعيا للجهاد. وهزم المسلمون، فأسر مع من أسر، ونقل الى موسكو، وبقي أسيرا الى ان توفي هناك شهيدا.
