السيد علي بن إسماعيل من نسل الإمام المتوكل على الله كان من أكابر العلماء وأحاسن الفضلاء، قال الشوكاني: وفد إلى صنعاء وسمع مني رسالتي المسماة " الدر النضيد في إخلاص التوحيد " وكذلك حضر معنا في قراءة مؤلفي المسمى " إتحاف الأكابر بإسناد الدفاتر " وكتب المؤلفين بخطه، وبالجملة فقد دار بيني وبينه من المساجلات الأدبية والمكاتبات الشعرية، ما يكثر سرد بعضه، وقد رقمت بعض ذلك في مجموع شعري، مات سنة ألف ومائتين وتسع وعشرين رحمه الله تعالى.
