محمد بن علي بن عبد الله الأموي، يعرف بابن الشيخ: من أهل سبتة؛ يكنى: أبا عبد الله. محدث سبتة في وقته، شهر بالخير والصلاح والورع. رحل إلى الأندلس فأطال المقام بها، وسمع من أبي عيسى وهب بن مسرة، وابن الخراز وغيرهم. وكانت عنده غرائب وعجائب. وتوفي في حدود أربع مائة. أفادنيه القاضي أبو الفضل بن عياض وكتبه لي بخطه.
