محمد بن عبد الرحمن بن سمعان: من أهل الثغر؛ يكنى: أبا عبد الله. يحدث عن أبي عمر الطلمنكي المقرئ، وأبي عبد الله بن الحذاء القاضي، ومحمد بن يمن وغيرهم. وكان معتنيا بالعلم وروايته، أخذ عنه أبو بكر محمد بن محمد بن جماهر وغيرهم. وقرأت بخط ابن سمعان هذا قال: سمعت ابن أبي نصرٍ يقول: سمعت أبا بكر يقول: سمعت النيسابوري الحاكم يقول: حججت في ستة من أصحابي الحفاظ،فلما وصلنا البيت وطفنا، وتروينا من زمزم دعا كل واحد منا بدعوة فأجيبت. فقلت له بما دعوت؟ قال: دعوت أن ييسر لي التأليف.
