    عثمان بن محمد المعافري يعرف: بابن الحوت، ومن أهل طليطلة؛ يكنى: أبا بكر. سمع على أبي عبد الله الفخار، وابن ذونين وغيرهما. وكان من خيار المسلمين وأفاضلهم، كثير التلاوة للقرآن، مواظبا على شهود الصلوات في الجامع ﵀. ذكره ابن مطاهر. قال غيره: وتوفي في ذي القعدة سنة تسع وأربعين وأربع مائة. ومولده في شعبان سنة سبع وثمانين وثلاث مائة.
