العبر في خبر من غبر" للذهبي. يقول الذهبي عن منهجه في الكتاب (١/ ٣): وبعد فهذا تاريخ مختصر على السنوات أذكر فيه ما قدر لي من أشهر الحوادث والوفيات، مما يتعين على الذكي حفظه، ويتحتم على العالم إحضاره. اهـ. وتحدث عن بداية المحنة (١/ ٢٩٣ - ٢٩٤) وعن المحنة في عهد المعتصم (١/ ٢٩٦)،ثم ترجم للإمام أحمد (١/ ٣٤٢) ترجمة مختصرة، ذكر نسبه، وبعض صفاته الخِلقية، والخُلقية، ثم ذكر بعض المصنفات المفردة في مناقبه. - "
