المنتظم في تاريخ الملوك والأمم" لابن الجوزي (ت ٥٩٧ هـ). ذكر فيه حوادث التاريخ، منذ بدء الخلق إلى سنة أربع وسبعين وخمسمائة، وتحدث عن بداية المحنة مع المأمون في حوادث سنة ثمان عشرة ومائتين (١١/ ١٥ - ٢٤)، ثم امتحانه على يد المعتصم في حوادث سنة تسع عشرة ومائتين (١١/ ٤٤ - ٤٢)، وذكر رواية ميمون بن الأصبغ، وقد قال عنها الذهبي في "السير": هذِه حكاية منكرة (٢). ثم ترجم للإمام أحمد فيمن توفي سنة إحدى وأربعين ومائتين (١١/ ٢٨٦ - ٢٨٩)، وذكر شيئًا من مناقبه، ثم قال: اقتصرنا هاهنا على هذِه النبذة؛ لأني قد جمعت فضائله في كتاب كبير جعلته مائة باب. - "
