٣٣٧ - المعتمد على الله أبو العباس أحمد بن جعفر بن محمد بن هرون الرشيد العباسي (٤)، الخامس عشر منهم، المتوفى ببغداد في رجب سنة تسع وسبعين ومائتين عن خمسين سنة، بويع بعد قتل ابن عمّه محمد بن هرون في رجب سنة ٢٥٦ ولما تم أمره انهمك على اللهو واللَّذات، فكرهه الناس واستولى على الأمور أخوه الموفق طلحة وصار إليه. الحل والعقد والمعتمد يَسكر ويُعربد مع نُدمائه إلى أن تمكن المعتضد من الأمور وجعل العهد إليه، فمات فجأة وهو سكران بين المغنّين [والندماء]، فقيل سُمَّ وكانت خلافته ثلاثًا وعشرين سنة ليس له إلا الاسم وكان أسمر رَبعةً مدوّر الوجه، صغير اللّحية. ذكره المؤرخون.
