٨٤ - أبو بكر محمدُ بنُ عليِّ بنِ إسماعيلَ القفالُ، الشاشيُّ؛ الفقيه، الشافعيُّ. إمام عصره بلا مدافعة، كان فقيهًا محدثًا أصوليًا لغويًا شاعرًا، لم يكن بما وراء النهر للشافعيين مثله في وقته، رحل إلى خراسان والعراق والحجاز والشام والثغور، وسار ذكره في البلاد. روى عن: محمد بن جرير الطبري، وروى عنه: الحاكمُ أبو عبد اللَّه، وأبو عبد اللَّه بن منده، وأبو عبد الرحمن السلمي، وجماعة كثير. ووقع الاختلاف في وفاته، فقيل: في سنة ست وثلاثين وثلاث مئة، وقيل: خمس وستين وثلاث مئة. والشاشي: نسبة إلى شاش، مدينة وراء نهر سيحون، خرج منها جماعة من العلماء، وهذا القفال غيرُ القفال المروزي، وهو متأخر عن هذا.
