علي بن أحمد بن محمد بن علي بن متويه، أبو الحسن الواحدي: أوحد عصره في التفسير، عالم بالأدب، كان من أولاد التجار، أصله من ساوة (بين الري وهمذان). ولد بنيسابور، وأخذ عنه شيوخها. قال القفطي: "وسار الناس إلى علمه، واستفادوا من فوائده" وكان نظام الملك يكرمه ويعظمه. والواحدي نسبة إلى الواحد بن الديل بن مهرة. توفي بنيسابور. له "البسيط" تفسير كبير، أكثر فيه من الإعراب والشواهد واللغة، و"الوسيط" في التفسير أيضا، وهو مختار من البسيط، و "الوجيز" وقد طبع: بمصر سنة ١٣٠٥ هـ بهامش "التفسير المنير لمعالم التنزيل". و "أسباب النزول" طبع بمصر سنة ١٣١٥ هـ (١). الحرالي [.. - ٦٣٨ هـ / .. - ١٢٤١ م]
