عبد الرحمن بن محمد بن علي بن علوي، الشهير بالسقاف، وهو جد الأسرة التي عرفت بهذه الشهرة: متصوف، عارف بالفقه والحديث والتفسير، من كبار علماء حضرموت في وقته. ولد في تريم(بحضرموت) وتعلم بها وب "غيل أبي وزير، وعدن. واشتهر، فرحل إليه من البلاد المجاورة للأخذ عنه. قال في تاريخ حضرموت: "برع في الأصول والمعاني والبيان والتفسير والحديث، وبرز في هذه الفنون". توفي في تريم (١). القلقشندي [٧٨٢ - ٨٢٦ هـ / ١٣٨٠ - ١٤٢٣ م]
