محمد بن أبي الفرج بن أبي المعالي الشيخ فخر الدين أبو المعالي الموصلي البغدادي المقرئ الشافعي معيد النظامية، قدم بغداد سنة ثنتين وسبعين وخمس مائة، فتفقه بها معيد النظامية، قدم بغداد سن ثنتين وسبعين وخمس مائة، فتفقه بها على يحيى بن سعدون القرطي، وسمع الحديث منه ومن خطيب الموصل، وقرأ العربية على الكمال عبد الرحمن الأنباري، قال ابن النجار: كانت له معرفة تامة بوجوه القراءات وعللها وطرقها وله في ذلك مصنفات، وكان فقيهًا فاضلًا حسن الكلام في مسائل الخلاف، ويعرف النحو معرفة حسنة، وكان كيسًا متوددًا.
