محمد بن جعفر بن أحمد بن محمد بن عبد العزيز قاضي القضاة أبو الحسن الهاشمي العباسي المكي ثم البغدادي الشافعي تفقه على ابن المفضل، وسمع الحديث من جده، وأبي الوقت، وأجاز له ابن الحصين، وأبو العز بن كادس وغيرهما، وعنه ابنه الحافظ جعفر بن خليل، والبلداني، مولده سنة أربع وثمانين، وعزل عنها سنة ثمان وثمانين بسبب أنه حكم في قضية اتهم فيها بخمسين دينارًا، فالله أعلم، ولزم بيته إلى أن مات سنة خمس وتسعين وخمس مائة.
