أحمد بن علي بن برهان أبو الفتح الحماس البغدادي تفقه أولًا بمذهب أحمد بن حنبل ﵀ على أبي الوفاء بن عقيل ثم تحول شافعيًا، فاشتغل على أبي حامد الغزالي، وإلكيا، وأبي بكر الشاشي وبرع في المذهب، وكان ذكيا حاذقًا فطنا خارقا، لا يكاد يسمع شيئًا إلا حفظه، يضرب به المثل في المشكلات في الأصول والفروع، وصار عالما يقتدى به، ورحل إليه الطلبة من البلدان، واستغرق عامة ليله ونهاره في الاشتغال ورقت به الحال حتى درس في النظامية شهرًا، وسمع الحديث من النعالي، ونصر بن النظر وجماعة، وقرأ صحيح البخاري على أبي طالب الزينبي وسمعه ابن كليب بقراءته، ومات في ثامن عشر جمادى الأولى سنة ثماني عشرة وخمس مائة.
