ثم دخلت سنة تسع وخمسين ومائتين فمن الحوادث فيها: أنه رجع الموفق من حرب الزنج متعللا بالمرض، فبعث المعتمد موسى بن بغا فشخص من سامراء نحو الزنج وذلك في ذي القعدة، وشيعه المعتمد، وخلع عليه في الطريق، وقامت بينه وبينهم حروب يطول ذكرها في بضعة عشر شهرا، ثم انصرف موسى عن الحرب، ووجّه في هذه السنة بجماعة من الزنج أسرى إلى سامرا، فوثبت بهم العامة فقتلوا أكثرهم، ودخل الزنج الأهواز في هذه السنة فقتلوا زهاء خمسين ألفا. وحج بالناس في هذه السنة إبراهيم بن محمد بن إسماعيل بن جعفر بن سليمان بن علي.
