وفي هذه السنة قدم قتيبة بن مسلم خراسان واليا عليها من قبل الحجاج [١] قدم والمفضل يعرض الجند، وهو يريد أن يغزو/ فخطب قتيبة وحثهم على الجهاد، ثم عرض الجند وسار واستخلف بمرو على حربها إياس بن عبد الله بن عمرو، وعلى الخراج عثمان بن السعدي، فعبر النهر وتلقته الملوك بهدايا، وافتدوا منه بلادهم فرضي ورجع إلى مرو. وقد زعم بعضهم أن قدوم قتيبة خراسان كان في سنة خمس وثمانين، وكان فيما سبى امرأة برمك، أبي خالد بن برمك.
