فمن الحوادث فيها مقتل عبيد الله بن زياد [١] وذلك أن إبراهيم بن الأشتر خرج يقصد ابن زياد، فالتقوا قريبا من الموصل، فاقتتلوا قتالا شديدا وقتل خلق كثير من الفريقين، وقال ابن الأشتر: قتلت رجلا وجدت منه ريح المسك تحت راية مفردة على شاطئ نهر فالتمسوه، فإذا هو عبيد الله بن زياد، ضربه فقده نصفين، وقتل الحصين بن نمير، وانهزم أصحاب ابن زياد، وتبعهم أصحاب إبراهيم، فكان من غرق أكثر ممن قتل، وأصابوا عسكرهم وفيه من كل شيء وخرج المختار من الكوفة، فنزل ساباط، وجاءته البشرى بقتل ابن زياد وهزيمة أصحابه، وانصرف المختار إلى الكوفة، ومضى ابن الأشتر إلى الموصل، وبعث عماله عليها.
