    أَبُو العَلَاء الواسِطي (٣٤٩ - ٤٣١ هـ = ٩٦٠ - ١٠٤٠ م) محمد بن علي بن أحمد بن يعقوب بن مروان، أبو العلاء الواسطي: قاض، من أهل العلم بالحديث والقراآت. أصله من فم الصلح. نشأ وتعلم بواسط. ورحل إلى بغداد والكوفة والدينور. ثم استوطن بغداد، ورد إليه القضاء بالحريم في شرقها، وبالكوفة، وغيرها من سقي الفرات. وجمع كثيرا من الحديث وخرّج أبوابا وتراجم وشيوخاً. وانتهتإليه رياسة الإقراء بالعراق. وتوفي ببغداد (١) .
