    حُسَين بايْ (١٠٨٠ - ١١٥٣ هـ = ١٦٧٠ - ١٧٤٠ م) حسين بن علي تركي، أبو محمد: مؤسس الإمارة (الحسينية) في تونس، وإليه نسبتها. أصله من كريت. ولد بتونس، وتقلد بعض الأعمال فيها، ثم كان (كاهية) إبراهيم باشا الشريف (واليها) ونشبت الحرب بين الجزائريين والتونسيين، فانهزم إبراهيم باشا وأسر، فاجتمع أعيان تونس على مبايعة حسين باي، فامتنع، فأكرهوه ونودي بامارته سنة ١١١٧ هـ فبنى آثارا كثيرة، منها (الجامع الحسيني) المنسوب إليه، وحسنت سيرته. قتل في واقعة بالقرب من القيروان (٢) .
