المَهْدي العَلَوي (٠٠٠ - ٩٤٣ هـ = ٠٠٠ - ١٥٣٦ م) أحمد بن يحيى بن الفضل، من سلالة الهادي إِلى الحَقّ يحيى بن الحسين، الحسني العلويّ، شمس الدين: إمام زيدي من كبار القائمين في اليمن. كان آباؤه يتوارثون الإمامة خفية في عهد الدولة الرسولية، ولما ظهر ضعف الرسوليينجهر صاحب الترجمة بدعوته فالتفّ حوله خلق كثير، وجعل جبال صنعاء قاعدة لملكه، واستمر إلى أن توفي (١) .
