فأما حاطب بن الحارث فهاجر إلى الحبشة في المرة الثانية وبها مات،وولد له بها: محمد بن حاطب، وأرضعته أسماء بنت عميس، وهي أم عبد الله بن جعفر بن أبي طالب، وأرضعت أمه عبد الله بن جعفر، فهما أخوان من الرضاع، فكانا يتواصلان على ذلك، وكان محمد بن حاطب يكنى أبا ابراهيم، وشهد مع علي مشاهده، ومات بالكوفة في ولاية بشر بن مروان أيام عبد الملك، وحفظ عن النبي ﷺ أنه «رقاه حين احترقت يده» وكان مع حاطب بأرض الحبشة ابنه الحارث فقدم في إحدى السفينتين مع جعفر بن أبي طالب ومعه أخوه محمد.
