وأما عتبة فكان سيد قريش في زمانه وكان من المطعمين يوم بدر، روي عن عبد الله بن عمر أنه قال: كان عتبة سيد قريش في الجاهلية، وقيل: ماساد قريشا مملق غير عتبة، وأبي طالب. وقتل عتبة عبيدة بن الحارث يوم بدر، ويقال إنه شرك في قتله علي بن أبي طالب، ويقال قتله حمزة. وقد كتبنا خبره فيما تقدم.
