عبد الوارث أبو الأزهر بن حسن بن أحمد بن معتب بن أبي الأزهر كان بيت معتب بيت علم بالقيروان وكان من الأئمة الراسخين ذا فقه بارع وعلم بالأصول مجوداً للوثائق والأحكام وعلم القضاء منور الوجه جميل الشيبة متواضعاً. قال بن أبي زيد: ما بإفريقية أفقه من أبي الأزهر إنما قطع به قلة دنياه. صحب أبا بكر بن اللباد وأبا عبد الله بن مسرور وكان عيشه من الوثائق قال بن حارث: أبو الأزهر هذا حافظ فقيه موثق. كان ممن يتحلق بجامع القيروان مع بن أبي زيد وابن هشام وغيرهما. توفي سنة إحدى أو اثنتين وتسعين وثلاثمائة.ومن الأسماء المتفرقة من الطبقة الوسطى من أهل أفريقية:
