    بعض آل المهلب قال يزيد بن عبد الملك لبعض ولد المهلب حين أتى بهم أسرى: كيف رأيتم الله صنع بكم؟ فقالوا: يا أمير المؤمنين، قوم زرعتهم الطاعة وحصدتهم المعصية. شاعر مات خليفة ليزيد بن عبد الملك فقال: هل ترك من خلف؟ قالوا: ترك ابناً له. فأدخل عليه فقال: يا بني، إلى من أوصى بك أبوك؟ فأطرق ساعة حتى ظن يزيد أنه قد أفحم، ثم رفع رأسه وقال: من الخفيف إن مثلي يوصي الرجال إليه ... ليس مثلي يوصي به الآباء إنني والذي يحج له النا ... س ومن دون بيته البيداءلملي بما يؤمل في المر ... ء وإن كان في أخيك فتاء فأمر له يزيد بأرزاق أبيه.
