محمد بن الخليل أبو بكر المقرئ الأخفش الصغير حدث بعض أصحابه أنه كان يحفظ ثلاثين ألف بيت شعر شاهد في كتاب الله ﷿. أنشد أبو بكر محمد بن الخليل المقرئ: من الكامل وجبت علي زكاة ما ملكت يدي ... وزكاة جاهي أن أعين وأشفعا فإذا ملكت فجد، فإن لم تستطع ... فاحرص بجهدك في الورى أن تنفعا قال حسن بن الحسن الهاشمي الدمشقي: إن الأخفش الصغير قديم الموت - فيما أحسبه - مات بعد سنة ستين وثلاث مئة. وكان له ابن نبيل عالم باللغة والعربية.
