    محمد بن أشعث بن يحيى الخزاعي الخراساني أحد قواد بني هاشم. ولاه المنصور دمشق بعد صالح بن علي، وكان ممن حضر حصار دمشق في أول سلطان بني هاشم. قال خليفة بن خياط: وفيها - يعني سنة ثلاث وأربعين ومئة - وجه محمد بن الأشعث، وهو على مصر، أبا الأحوص العبدي في ستة آلاف إلى إفريقية، فنزل برقة، فلقي أبا الخطاب الإباضي قريباً من برقة، فهزم أبو الأحوص، ورجع إلى برقة، ومضى أبو الخطاب إلى طرابلس، فلقيه محمد بن الأشعث بلبدة، فقتل أبو الخطاب، ودخل ابن الأشعث القيروان. ذكر الواقدي أن محمد بن الأشعث هذا مات بآمد مجتازاً سنة تسع وأربعين ومئة أو بعدها. وذكر الطبري أنه مات سنة تسع وأربعين ومئة.
