محمد بن أحمد بن المعلى بن يزيد أبو شبيب الأسدي روى عن أبيه بسنده عن علي بن أبي حملة: أنه لما ولي عمر بن عبد العزيز قال نصارى دمشق: يا أمير المؤمنين، قد علمت حال كنيستنا؛ إنها قد صارت إلى ما ترى. فعوضهم كنيسة من كنائس دمشق لم تكن في صلحهم، يقال لها: كنيسة توما.
