سهل بن صدقة الأموي مولى عمر بن عبد العزيز حدث عن بعض خاصة عمر بن عبد العزيز أنه حين أفضت إليه الخلافة سمعوا في منزله بكاء عالياً، فسئل عن البكاء؟ فقيل إن عمر بن عبد العزيز قد خير جواريه فقال: لقد نزل بي أمر شغلني عنكن، فمن أحبت أن أعتقها أعتقتها، ومن أرادت أن أمسكها لم يكن مني إليها شيء، فبكين أياساً منه.
