    جعفر بن محمود الكاتب قدم دمشق صحبة المتوكل، واستوزره المستعين سنة ثمان وأربعين ومائتين، ثم استوزره المعتز بالله. ولما عزل من الوزارة واستوزر بعده عيسى بن فرخان شاه أنشد محمد بن غياث لنفسه: في غير حفظ الله يا جعفر ... زلت فزال الجور والمنكر بلغت أمراً لست من أهله ... باعك عمّا دونه يقصر كنت كثوب زانه طيّه ... حيناً فأبدى عيبه المنشر ماينفع المنظر من جاهل ... بأمره ليس له مخبر بل مثل عيسى لا انقضى عمره ... يخص بالعرب ويستوزر حلم وعلم ثاقب زنده ... بمثله من مثله يفخر تذكره الأشعار إن أنشدت ... وأنت منسيّ فما تذكر توفي جعفر بن محمود في سنة ثمان وستين ومائتين.
