أحمد بن خلف الدمشقي نزيل بخارى حدث عن أبيه قال: سمعت الربيع يقول: قال الشافعي: الشرب في الخزف لا تطيب به نفسي، أخاف أن يكون طرحوا في التراب النجاسة والنار لا تطهره عندي، والشرب في الصفر والنحاس ربما ظهر في الماء رائحته فأفسده، والشرب في الرصاص يضر الجوف، والشرب في الفضة حرام، فلا شيء أصلح من الشرب في الزجاج. قال الربيع: وكان الشافعي أكثر شربه في كوز زجاج أو قدح زجاج.
