    ٥٩٤ - محمد (¬٥) بن مسروق بن معدان الكوفي قاضي مصر.أول من أتخذ القمطر بمصر، وهو بكسر القاف وفتح الميم ما يصان فيه الكتب. وينشد. ليس بعلم ما يعطي القمطر … ما العلم إلا ما وعاه الصدر وكان يختمها وتودع، فإذا اجلس للحكم أحضرت، إنما كانت القضاة قبله تحمل الكتب في منديل معهم. وهو أول (من أدخل) (¬١) النصارى إلى الجامع في حكوماتهم. روى عن سفيان ومسعر وغيرهما، وعنه أبو حاتم وأبو زرعة ونحوهما. مات سنة خمس وثمانين ومئة.
