[١٣٤٩] سفيان بن سعيد بن مسروق بن حمزة بن حبيب الثوري أبو عبد الله وهم إخوة أربعة سفيان والمبارك وحبيب وعمر كان مولد سفيان سنة خمس وتسعين ومات بالبصرة مختفيا عند عبد الرحمن بن مهدى وفى داره مات في شعبان سنة إحدى وستين ومائة وقبره بالبصرة في مقبرة بنى كليب قد زرته مرارا وكان رحمة الله عليه من الحفاظ المتقنين والفقهاء في الدين ممن لزم الحديث والفقه وواظب على الورع والعبادة ولم يبال بما فاته من حطام هذه الفانية الزائلة مع سلامة دينه له حتى صار علما يرجع إليه في الامصار وملجئا يقتدى به في الاقطار
