    ٦١١٠ اشتهر بها الشيخ الفاضل أبو العلاء البصري الإمام الكبير رأس المعتزلة اسمه الحسين بن على من أصحاب الكرخي.مات سنة تسمع وستين وثلاثمائة، ودفن في تربة الكرخي، وصلى عليه الحسن بن عبد الغفار النحوي، وذكره الصيمري في طبقة أبي محمد عبد الغفار النحوي، ذكره الصيمري في طبقة أبي محمد بن عبدك، قال: ولم يبلغ أحد مبلغه في هذين العلمين أعني الكلام والفقه، مع سعة النفس وكثرة الأفضال، والتقدم عند السلطان، وايثار الأصحاب، لم يكن له صاحب إلا على بن محمد الواسطي. وأيضا:
