أحمد بن عثمان بن الفضل بن جعفر أبو الفرج المعروف بابن المخبزي. سمع أبا القاسم بن حبابة، وعيسى بن علي الوزير. كتبت عنه، وكان صدوقا. أخبرنا أبو الفرج أحمد بن عثمان بن الفضل، قال: أخبرنا عبيد الله بن محمد بن إسحاق البزاز، قال: حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد بن عبد العزيز، قال: حدثنا أبو خيثمة، قال: حدثنا يحيى، عن سعيد، عن سفيان وشعبة قالا: حدثنا علقمة بن مرثد، عن سعد بن عبيدة، عن أبي عبد الرحمن، عن عثمان، قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: قال أحدهما: خيركم، وقال الآخر: أفضلكم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه. قال لنا ابن المخبزي: ولدت في سنة ست وسبعين وثلاثمائة.
