محمد بن يعقوب بن الحسين ابن أمير المؤمنين المأمون، يكنى أبا بكر الهاشمي. سمع من الحسن بن علي المعمري كتاب يوم وليلة، وكان له ابن يقال له: إبراهيم، كتب الحديث الكثير، وذكر محمد بن أبي الفوارس أن محمد بن يعقوب هذا توفي في يوم الثلاثاء لليلتين خلتا من المحرم سنة ست وخمسين وثلاثمائة. قال: ومولده في سنة أربع وستين ومائتين. قال ابن أبي الفوارس: قصدته لأسمع منه كتاب يوم وليلة فلم يقدر ذاك، ومات ابنه إبراهيم بعده بأسبوع فجاءة. قال: وكان مولده في سنة خمس وثلاثمائة، ولا أظنه حدث.
