إسماعيل بن حماد الجوهري صاحب صحاح اللغة ترجمته معروفة وقد رأيت بخط يشبه أن يكون خط الحافظ تقي الدين محمد بن رافع السلامي ترجمة الجوهري وفيها ما لفظه وقيل إنه اختلط في آخر عمره ومات مترديا من سطح داره بنيسابور ثم أرخ وفاته [تنبيه] : نقل النووي في تهذيبه عن الشيخ تقي الدين ـ يعني ابن الصلاح ـ ما لفظه: (ولا التفات إلى قول الجوهري صاحب صحاح اللغة (١) .. إلى أن قال: فإنه ممن لا يقبل ما ينفرد به، وقد حكم عليه بالغلط من وجهين فذكرهما وقد تعقبه النووي في الوجهين، والله أعلم.١١ -[٤]
