"الألقاب" (١/ ٧٥). ساق الحافظ عدة حكايات وروايات تتعلق بأبي الدنيا ثم قال: "فإذا تأملت هذه الروايات ظهرت على تخليط هذا الرجل في اسمه ونسبه ومولده وقدر عمره، وأنه كانلا يستمر على نمط واحد في ذلك كله، فلا يغتر بمن حسَّن الظن به، والله أعلم". "اللسان" (٤/ ٦٠٢ - ٦٠٣). وقال فيه: "الكذاب". "القوس" (٣/ ١٨٥).
