[محمود بن شجاع] بن محمد بن الحسن الأموي برهان الدين الفقيه ولد سنة ٥١٠ بدمشق وأخذ العلم عن البرهان البلخي علي بن الحسن تلميذ عبد العزيز بن عمر بن مازه وولي قضاء العسكر وجمع كتابا في الفقه وتفقه عليه ابن الأبيض محمد بن يوسف وداود بن أرسلان ومات سادس عشر جمادي الآخرة سنه تسع وتسعين وخمسمائة. (قال الجامع) ذكره اليافعي في حوادث سنة ٥٩٩ بقوله فيها توفي الإمام العلامة أبو الموفق مسعود بن شجاع المعروف بالبرهان الحنفي ودرس في النورية وكان صدراً معظماً رأساً في المذهب انتهى.
