[محمد بن محمد] بن أيوب أبو محمد القطواني كان شيخاً كبيراً وإماما جليل القدر عن السمعاني قال كان مفتياً واعظاً مفسراً مات سنة ست وخمسمائة. (قال الجامع) ذكر السمعاني أن القطوانى نسبة إلى قطوان بفتح القاف وسكون الطاء المهملة بعدها واو بعدها ألف بعدها نون قرية كبيرة على خمس فراسخ من سمرقند وأهل سمرقند يقولونه بسكون الطاء وظنى أنه بحركته وقال منها الإمام أبو محمد محمد بن محمد ابن أيوب القطواني كان مفتياً واعظاً مشهوراً سقط عن دابته منصرفاً من صلاة الجمعة فمات من ذلك. سنة ٥٠٦ انتهى.
