مذهبه في تقديم عثمان على علي ﵉: سئل عمَّن قدَّمَ عليًّا على عثمان، أمبتدع هو؟ فقال: هذا أهل أن يبدّع، أصحاب رسول الله ﷺ قدموا عثمان ﵁.وقال أيضًا: نقول: عثمان ثم علي، فمن قدم عليًا على عثمان فقد أزرى بأصحاب الشورى. وقال أيضًا: من قدم عليًا على أبي بكر فقد طعن على رسول الله ﷺ، ومن قدم عليًا على عمر فقد طعن على رسول الله ﷺ وعلى أبي بكر، ومن قدم عليًا على عثمان فقد طعن على رسول الله ﷺ وأبي بكر وعمر وعلى المهاجرين، ولا أحسب يصلح له عمل.
