sahih· Al-Albani

Narrated Alaqah ibn Sahar at-Tamimi:

Alaqah came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and embraced Islam. He then came back from him and passed some people who had a lunatic fettered in chains. His people said: We are told that your companion has brought some good. Have you something with which you can cure him? I then recited Surat al-Fatihah and he was cured. They gave me one hundred sheep. I then came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and informed him of it. He asked: Is it only this? The narrator, Musaddad, said in his other version: Did you say anything other than this? I said: No. He said: Take it, for by my life, some accept if for a worthless chain, but you have done so for a genuine one.

Ruqyah (healing recitation) is one of the remedies that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encouraged. In this Hadith, `Ilaqah ibn Suhar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that “He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), embraced Islam, and then returned”. That is, back to the tribe whence he had come to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The narration reads, “[On his way back] He passed by a group of people who had with them a lunatic fettered in chains". The people said to `Ilaqah: "We have been informed that your companion” – referring to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) - “has brought goodness". That is, what he brought through Islam is good. The narration continues, "Do you have anything by which to treat this lunatic? `Ilaqah said: “I did Ruqyah with Al-Fatihah for him” - meaning I recited Surat Al-Fatihah over him. Ruqyah is that which is used for seeking protection through recitation. The narrator added, "and he was cured". That is, healed from the madness he suffered. He then said, “They gave me a hundred sheep", i.e., as a reward. The narration continues, "I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him of what had happened. He said, “Is it only this?” - i.e., did you recite anything other than Al-Fatihah? Musaddad ibn Musarhad (may Allah be pleased with him), one of the narrators, reported in another narration, “Did you say anything other than this?” That is, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was inquiring to ensure that the Ruqyah did not include anything contradictory to the religion. In this narration, `Ilaqah replied, “No” and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) then said, “Take it” - i.e., the one hundred sheep - “for by my life,” - which is a form of emphasis, not an oath - “some receive benefit through false Ruqyah.” That is, those who perform Ruqyah by invoking jinn or stars. The narration then reads, “but you have received benefit through a genuine one.” That is, what you received was for your Ruqyah using the words of Allah, which is the most rightful means of healing. This approach is more appropriate than earning through Ruqyah that contradicts Shari`ah, as it incurs sinfulness and accountability..
