Sunan Abi Dawud, 3804
sahih· Al-Albani

Narrated Al-Miqdam ibn Ma'dikarib:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Beware, the fanged beast of prey is not lawful, nor the domestic asses, nor the find from the property of a man with whom treaty has been concluded, except that he did not need it. If anyone is a guest of people who provide no hospitality for him, he is entitled to take from them the equivalent of the hospitality due to him.

The Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is revelation from Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded certain matters and forbade others that are not explicitly mentioned in the Noble Quran. It is mandatory to comply with his commands and avoid what he prohibited, for obeying him (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is obedience to Allah, as Allah the Exalted Says (interpretation of the meaning): {Whoever obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allah} [An-Nisa’ 4:80].In this Hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Indeed, it is not permissible to consume any predatory animal with fangs,” meaning any beast that attacks humans with its fangs, such as wolves, lions, dogs, and the like. “Nor the domesticated donkey,” meaning it is not permissible to eat it, referring to the domesticated donkey as opposed to the wild one. “Nor the lost property (Luqatah) belonging to a person under a covenant,” where lost property refers to something that has been picked up after being lost by its owner, and a person under a covenant is a non-Muslim who has been granted safety by the Muslims. This was specifically mentioned out of fear that people might take such property lightly because its owner is a disbeliever. “Unless he has no need for it,” meaning: unless the owner abandons it or leaves it for whoever finds it. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “And whoever visits a people and they do not offer him hospitality,” meaning: he arrives at a people as a guest, “then he is entitled to take from them the equivalent of what they should have provided for him,” that is: he may take from their wealth an amount equivalent to the hospitality they denied him. This Hadith encourages honoring the guest and tending to his needs to the best of one’s ability..
