Malik related to me from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Abd ar- Rahman ibn Abi Sasaca that Sulayman ibn Yasar said, "The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), entered the house of Maimuna bint al-Harith and there was a lizard in which there were eggs to eat. Abdullah ibn Abbas and Khalid ibn al-Walid were with him. He said, 'From where did you get this?' She replied, 'My sister, Huzayla bint al-Harith, gave it to me.' He then told Abdullah ibn Abbas and Khalid to eat. They said, 'Won't you eat, Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'There are those who visit me from Allah.' Maimuna said, 'Messenger of Allah, shall we give you some milk to drink which we have?' He said, 'Yes.' When he drank, he said, 'From where did you get this?' She said, 'My sister, Huzayla gave it to me.' The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), said, 'Do you see your slave-girl whom you asked me for permission to free? Give her to your sister and bring her to your maternal relatives to take care of her. That is better for you.' "
Malik related to me from Ibn Shihab from Abu Umama ibn Sahl ibn Hunayf from Abdullah ibn Abbas that Khalid ibn al-Walid ibn al-Mughira entered the house of Maimuna, the wife of the Prophet, (ﷺ), with the Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), and he was brought a roasted lizard. The Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), stretched his hand toward it. One of the women who was in Maimuna's house said, "Tell the Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), what he means to eat." Someone said, "It is a lizard, Messenger of Allah." He withdrew his hand. Khalid said, "Is it haram, Messenger of Allah?" He said, "No, but there were none in my people's land, and I find that I dislike them." Khalid added, "I chewed and ate it while the Messenger of Allah, (ﷺ), was looking."
“I entered with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), I and Khalid bin Al-Walid, upon Maimunah so she brought us a vessel of milk. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) drank from it. I was upon his right and Khalid was upon left, so he said to me: ‘The (turn to) drink is for you, so if you wish, you could choose to grant it to Khalid.’ So I said: ‘I would not prefer anyone (above myself) for your leftovers.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever Allah feeds some food, then let him say: “O Allah, bless it for us, and feed us better than it, (Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhi wa aṭ`imnā khairan minhu)” and whomsoever Allah gives milk to drink, then let him say: “O Allah bless it for us, and grant us increase in it (Allāhumma bārik lanā fīhi wa zidnā minhu).” And the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘There is nothing that suffices in the place of food and drink except for milk.’”
"Together with Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), Khalid ibn al-Walid and I entered the presence of Maimuna, whereupon she brought us a vessel of milk and Allah’s Messenger drank (ﷺ), while I was on his right side and Khalid was on his left. He said to me: 'The drink is yours, but if you wish, you may let Khalid have it.' I said: 'I wouldn't give up your leftover drink for anyone!' Then Allah’s Messenger said (ﷺ): 'If Allah feeds someone a meal, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless us in it, and give us something even better!’ If Allah (Almighty and Glorious is He) gives a person some milk to drink, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless us in it, and grant us more of it!’ Then Allah’s Messenger said (ﷺ): 'Nothing but milk can substitute for both food and drink'!"
Khalid bin al-Waleed and I entered upon Maimoonah bint al-Harith with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). She said: Shall we give you some food that was given to us by Umm ‘Ufaiq? Two grilled lizards were brought, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) spat. Khalid said to him: I think you find it off-putting? He said: “Yes." She said: Shall I give you some milk that was given to us? He said: "Yes." A vessel of milk was brought and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) drank. I was on his right and Khalid was on his left, and he said to me: "The drink is yours, but if you want you can give precedence to Khalid." I said: I will not give precedence to anyone with regard to your leftover drink. Then he said: "If Allah provides food for anyone, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and give us something better than it." lf Allah provides milk for anyone, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and give us more.’ And there is nothing that takes the place of food or drink except milk.”
My maternal aunt Umm Hufaid gave the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) some ghee, milk and a (cooked) lizard. As for the lizard, the Prophet (ﷺ) found it off-putting. Khalid bin al-Waleed said to him: Do you find it off-putting, O Messenger of Allah? He said, "Yes." The Prophet (ﷺ) took the milk and drank some, then he said to Ibn 'Abbas, who was on his right, "As for the drink, it is your turn, but will you give me permission to give it to your paternal uncle?” Ibn 'Abbas said: I said: No, by Allah, with regard to your left-over drink I will never give precedence to anyone. Then I took it and drank some, then I gave it to him. Then the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I do not know of any drink that could replace food except milk. Whoever among you drinks it, let him say: ‘O Allah, bless it for us and give us more.' And whoever eats food, let him say: 'O Allah, bless it for us and give us something better than it.’"
