Riyad as-Salihin, 199

Abu Hurairah (May Allah bepleased with him) reported:

Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "There are three signs of a hypocrite: When he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is trusted, he betrays his trust." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Another narration adds the words: 'Even if he observes fasts, performs Salat and asserts that he is a Muslim".

Guidance from the Hadith:
1) The information the Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) gave in this Hadith includes two points: identifying the hypocrites and their qualities, and caution against possessing such qualities. Thus, the Hadith contains information and guidance.
2) Truthfulness in speech, honoring the promise, and fulfilling the trust are among the qualities of the believers, and they are all obligatory.
3) A Muslim’s speech should match his actions. {It is most loathsome to Allah that you say what you do not do.} [Surat as-Saff: 3]
