Narrated Al-Bara:

A man whose face was covered with an iron mask (i.e. clad in armor) came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) ! Shall I fight or embrace Islam first? "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Embrace Islam first and then fight." So he embraced Islam, and was martyred. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, A Little work, but a great reward. "(He did very little (after embracing Islam), but he will be rewarded in abundance).

It is from Allah’s favour upon a person to inspire him to do a good deed before passing from this life. It is from Allah’s grace over his servant to facilitate for him righteous deeds with which he concludes his life on this earth, to attain the eternal pleasures in the Hereafter, even if a person did only few good deeds in this life. In this hadeeth, al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that a man whose face was covered with an iron mask came to the Prophet ﷺ asking him if he should enter Islam first and then fight or fight first and then enter Islam. The Prophet ﷺ advised him to embrace Islam first and then join the fight. The man complied and he was martyred in the battle, so the Prophet ﷺ remarked that this man did very little after embracing Islam, but he will be rewarded in abundance because of his martyrdom, and that his place in Paradise is secured although he did not offer one prayer. The man came to the Prophet ﷺwhile the Muslims were preparing to go to war. It is said that the man was from the Ansaar from the tribe of al-Aws from Banee al-Nabeet, and it is said that his name was ‘Amr ibn Thaabit ibn Waqsh. From the benefits that can be concluded from this hadeeth is learning that Allah, out of His favour and grace, rewards His servants in abundance for fewgood deeds. It also shows that the priority of the Prophet ﷺ was that people enter Islam and worship Allah alone. .
