I said to Ibn 'Umar: Tell me in your own language and then explain it to me in any language because your language is different from our language (about the vessels) in which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has forbidden (us) to drink. He said: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) has forbidden (the preparation) of Nabidh in Hantama and that is a pitcher (besmeared with pitch), in gourd and that is pumpkin, in the varnished jar, in hollow stump and in wooden vessels. This Naqir is the wood of date-palm from which the vessel is fashioned out or hollowed out, but he commanded us to prepare Nabidh in waterskins.
"I asked Ibn 'Umar about what containers the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited. He informed us in your language, and he explained it to us in our language. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited Al-Hantamah, and it is an earthenware container, and he prohibited Ad-Dubba', and it is gourd, and he prohibited An-Naqir, and it is the trunk of a date-palm that is hollowed out or carved, and he prohibited Al-Muzaffat, and it is coated with pitch. And he ordered that Nabidh be prepared in water-skins." He said: There are narrations on this topic from 'Umar, 'Ali, Ibn 'Abbas, Abu Sa'eed, Abu Hurairah, 'Abdur-Rahman bin Ya'mur, Samurah, Anas, 'Aishah, 'Imran bin Husain, 'A'idh bin 'Amr, Al-Hakam Al-Ghifari, and Maimunah. [Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Hasan Sahih.
"We asked Ibn 'Umar about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar and he said: 'The Messenger of Allah [ﷺ] forbade that.' So I went to Ibn 'Abbas and said to him: 'Today I heard something that surprised me.' He said: 'What was it?' I said: 'I asked Ibn 'Umar about Nabidh made in an earthenware jar and he said: The Messenger of Allah [ﷺ] forbade it.' He said: 'Ibn 'Umar spoke the truth.' I said: 'What is an earthenware jar?' He said: 'Anything that is made of clay.'"
"The Messenger of Allah [ﷺ] forbade earthenware jars, Ad-Dubba' (gourds), Al-Muzaffat containers."
Ibn 'Umar was asked about earthenware jars: can nabeedh be made in them? He said: Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ) forbade that. The man went to Ibn ‘Abbas and told him what Ibn ‘Umar had said. Ibn 'Abbas said: He was right. The man said to Ibn 'Abbas: What kind of earthenware jar did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forbid? He said: Any vessel that is made from clay.
